This month we take a look at EUCALYPTUS OIL (e. globulus)
There are around 500 species of the evergreen Eucalyptus tree, the Australian Blue Gum being the most widely used to produce essential oil by steam distillation of the leaves & twigs. It has a distinctive strong, fresh camphorous aroma.
The Aborigines were well aware of the medicinal benefits of Eucalyptus Oil and today it is a familiar ingredient in chest rubs, decongestants, cough remedies and muscle & joint ointments.

Eucalyptus has powerful bactericidal and anti-viral actions with soothing, cooling, pain relieving properties.

Below are some suggested uses for EUCALYPTUS oil:
FOR A DECONGESTANT  helpful during winter months, apply to the chest using 4-5 drops in a hot compress or mix 3 drops of Eucalyptus in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil and apply as a stimulating chest rub.
TO CLEAR THE NASAL PASSAGES  add 3 drops of Eucalyptus to a steam inhalation or apply a few drops to a handkerchief and inhale as required.
TO PURIFY THE SICKROOM DURING ILLNESS  make up a spray using 20 drops of eucalyptus oil to 200ml of spring water. Shake well before each use and spray directly into the room to kill airborne germs.
TO PREPARE A SOOTHING MUSCLE OR JOINT RUB  combine 2 drops of Eucalyptus, 2 drops Roman Chamomile & 2 drops Lavender in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil and apply to the affected areas.
TO KEEP INSECTS AT BAY  mix 3 drops of Eucalyptus, 3 drops of Basil & 3 drops of Lavender for use in an oil vaporiser.
FOR A NATURAL ANTI-BACTERIAL KITCHEN SURFACE SPRAY  combine 10 drops of Eucalyptus, 30 drops of Tea Tree & 20 drops of Lemon with 500ml spring water in a plant sprayer. Shake well before each use and dry surfaces thoroughly before food preparation.
